The Organization for the Development of Crete S.A. (O.A.K. S.A.)
O.A.K. S.A. is a Governmental Organization, supervised by the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks. The Organization is based in Chania, having satellite offices in Heraklio, Rethymno and Lasithi. O.A.K. S.A is the largest operator of infrastructure management and water supply networks in Crete. The responsibilities of O.A.K. S.A. are the planning, designing, constructing & managing of:
- The Trans- European road network of Crete.
- The Hydraulic Infrastructures (Dams, reservoirs and water treatment plants).
- The water supply – irrigation networks of Crete.
Furthermore, it supports the development of the countryside through projects and Community Initiatives (Leader of Western Crete, Rural Development Programs, Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) of Western Crete, Employment Programs, startups support etc.) with the aim to contribute to the development of the region of Crete.
Role in Project
OAK SA is the Leader of the Comparative technical analysis (WP2).

Dr. Georgios Bazdanis
Mineral Resources Engineer, Technical University of Crete, MSc, PhD.
He is Research Associate at the Development Organization of Crete S.A. Holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters of Science (MSc) in the field of Geotechnology and Environment. He has significant experience in the subject areas of groundwater decontamination, heavy metals removal mechanisms and water/wastewater treatment works (PhD Thesis: Decontamination of effluents using Permeable Reactive Barriers).
Stylianos Gyparakis
Chemical Engineer NTUA, M.Sc Environmental and Sanitary Engineering
Stylianos Gyparakis holds a degree in Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, a M.Sc. degree in the field of Environmental & Sanitary Engineering, Technical University of Crete/ School of Environmental Engineering and a second M.Sc degree in Environmental Design of Infrastructure Works, Hellenic Open University/ School of Science & Technology. His research activities include water treatment processes, environmental impact assessments, food safety and quality issues.
Nikolaos Kefalakis
Chemist, University of Crete, M.Sc. in waste management
Nikolaos Kefalakis holds a degree in Chemistry, University of Crete and a M.Sc. degree in waste management, Hellenic Open University/ School of Science & Technology. Ηe has 27-year experience as a project manager in waste management and environmental impact assessments.
Sofia Michaki
Public Administration and Management, Hellenic Open University.
Sofia Michaki holds a degree in Public Administration and Management from Hellenic Open University. She has 20-year experience as a project manager in Rural Development Programs, Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) of Western Crete.
Dr. Triantafyllia Nikolaou
Physicist NKUA, M.Sc., Ph.D.
Dr. Nikolaou holds a degree in Physics, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, a M.Sc. degree in the field of Energy Production and Management, National Technical University of Athens and a Ph.D. degree in the scientific area of the Energy, Technical University of Crete. Her research activities include renewable energy systems, energy saving and water management plans.
Eftychia Vardoulakis
Geographer, University of South Carolina, USA, MSc
Ms. Vardoulaki holds a bachelor degree in geography and International Development and Social Change from Clark University, Worcester, MA, USA, and a M.Sc. degree in geography from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC., USA. She has 28 years professional experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
