Developing Farm-Level WEFE Nexus Composite Indicator: Application For Olive Producers In Crete

Given the increasing scarcity of natural resources and raising environmental concerns, the assessment of farms’ performance has received special attention. The nexus approach is particularly useful for such type of analysis since it reflects complex interconnections among the sectors of water, energy, food and environment (WEFE). One way to explicitly place agricultural production within the WEFE Nexus is to develop a composite indicator that will reflect interlinkages between agricultural production and the water, energy and environment pillars of the Nexus. Our study aims to operationalize WEFE Nexus and contributes to the existing literature by proposing a methodology to calculate the farm-level WEFE Nexus composite indicator using endogenous weights for aggregation. In addition, we develop a web application “WEFE Nexus Index calculator”, which allows users to estimate technical efficiency levels and calculate composite indicator values based on uploaded farm-level data.
