WEFE Nexus Online training

 SIGMA Nexus’ Coordinator Maria Vrachioli and the Cairo University research team represented the SIGMA Nexus in the WEFE Nexus Online training organized by PRIMA and GIZ Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme on 06-08 December 2021. The WEFE Nexus Online training was on the topic of addressing the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus in the context of climate change in the Mediterranean region.

The Online training was built on a 3-day agenda that was covering the following aspects:

  1. Build a common understanding of the WEFE Nexus as a key driver for a transition to a green economy and for the achievement of the SDG

  2. Inspire more WEFE Nexus solutions as well as integrated assessment tools and methods put forward by the science and research community in the Southern Mediterranean region

  3. Discuss opportunities of regional collaboration supporting the concrete implementation of the WEFE nexus approach

Together with other 3 Nexus European projects (AWESOME, SIM4Nexus and ARSINOE), SIGMA Nexus provided the current state of research and innovation within the WEFE Nexus framework and the design and implementation of Nexus solutions in the Mediterranean region within the SIGMA Nexus framework that can promote the operationalization of the WEFE Nexus.

In another session of the online training, the Cairo University (Partner of SIGMA Nexus) represented by Fadi Abdelradi, Eman Hussen, Darwich Salah and Abdelazim Negm presented their related to SIGMA Nexus research on the topic of WEFE Nexus in agri-food systems in Egypt. This research included: (i) The detection of agricultural land changes using remote sensing techniques. A case study in the south of Egypt, (ii) Impact of Nexus practices on the sustainability of corn and summer legumes production and (iii) hydrology modeling for optimized cropping pattern using WEAP software.
